The Third Grade class has a daily schedule that includes Spelling, Math, Language Arts, Phonics, Grammar, Handwriting, Social Studies, Reading, Science, Religion, Gospel Weeklies, Liturgical Music, class mass once a week, Music, Art, Computers, P.E., and Foreign Language.  The class is assisted by Mrs. Schellenger in Math.  Computers is taught by Mrs. Texeira, P.E. by Coach Bernice, Music by Mrs. Lease, Liturgical Music by Mr. Wooldridge, Science by Mrs. Schellenger, and Foreign Language by Ms. Poulain.

Throughout the year the class has several major projects.  They are the Saints Project, which includes a report on a Saint, a poster, and a costume of the Saint.  Students then attend the All Saints Day Mass and are in charge of the readings, prayers of the faithful, and bringing up the gifts.  The second major project of the year is a research project on a Native American tribe.  Students make collages, mobiles, dioramas, reports, or news videos about their Native American tribe that they have researched.  Another major project that the students partake in are pen pal letters.  We write to students in Mexico.  This pen pal project expands the students’ understanding of the world around them. The last major project of the year is a book report on a class read book called Snow Treasure by Marie McSwigan.

Students keep a journal of their writing throughout the year, as well as a portfolio of their best written work.  Once a week, one student is awarded with a student of the week certificate for their good work throughout the week. This student’s work is displayed on a bulletin board, as well as a “Star Student News” chart.  Students also have the opportunity to look at our class website in order to check for announcements, homework, recommended reading lists, and computer programs.

The class also goes on the following field trips: The Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels; Knotts Berry Farm: Adventures in Education, A Native American Encounter; the Getty Center- Storytelling through Art; the Griffith Observatory, and the Museum of Tolerance- Finding Our Families, Finding Ourselves program.  The Cathedral field trip allows the students to gain a better understanding of a Catholic place of worship and the different parts of the church.  Additionally, students are able to attend a daily mass and view the banners of Saints inside the church, which relates to their Saint project.  The Knotts Berry Farm field trip enhances the students’ knowledge about the culture, history, and life of the Native Americans. The Getty Center field trip enhances the Native American unit by discussing and viewing artists as storytellers in the museum.  During our Griffith Observatory visit, we view the planetarium and relate it to our science unit on the Solar System.  Last, the Musuem of Tolerance field trip introduces our Social Studies unit on Moving to America.  It discusses immigration, diversity, and where our families have come from.
